An urban life with a lower entry price

St. Louis's great advantage is the combination of substantial urban institutions and attainable historic housing. September 2026 Zillow data puts the city's typical home value around $181,000; that is a citywide estimate, not the price of a renovated house in every popular neighborhood. Forest Park and the medical and university corridor make the housing story more compelling than a low price alone. Zillow, 2026 City parks, 2026

Why the brick matters

The 1849 fire helped drive restrictions on wooden construction, shaping the city's durable association with brick. Later neighborhood development left a rich mix of rowhouses, flats, apartment buildings and detached houses. Buying that character means inspecting masonry, roofs, drainage and previous repairs, rather than assuming a handsome facade guarantees a sound building. Missouri History Museum, 2026 St. Louis historic preservation, 2026

A frequently quoted comparison of roughly $158 per square foot here and $285 in Chicago should not substitute for a matched sales period and property mix. The current Missouri listing summary reports about $153 per square foot for St. Louis listings; asking prices and closed sales are different measures. Compare individual houses with recent comparable sales and a proper inspection. Realtor.com Missouri market, 2026

Tour the basement, ask who maintains the roof in a shared building, and request utility history. For an older home, leave room in the budget for preventive work before spending the full allowance on finishes.

Neighborhoods worth walking

South City: parks, squares and established streets

The central corridor: institutions and nightlife

The Central West End combines apartments, restaurants and access to the Barnes-Jewish/WashU medical campus. The Grove, in Forest Park Southeast, has a lively Manchester Avenue corridor with LGBTQ+ nightlife and substantial redevelopment. Midtown and City Foundry add food, entertainment and proximity to university and arts institutions. These are different housing choices even when a map makes them look close together. Central West End, 2026 The Grove, 2026 City Foundry, 2026

Walk the route you expect to use after dark. Ask about construction, parking rules, noise and secure bicycle storage. A central location can reduce some driving, but a neighborhood name alone cannot tell you whether groceries, work and friends are accessible without a car.

Inner-ring suburbs are part of the choice

Clayton is a separate municipality and employment center. Maplewood offers a compact business district; Webster Groves and Kirkwood combine established residential streets with their own centers; Brentwood provides another close-in option. Compare the actual school district and municipal boundary at each address. A St. Louis mailing address does not establish city residency. Forest Park and the free cultural foundation

Forest Park covers roughly 1,300 acres, commonly reported as 1,326, and is larger than New York's Central Park. The Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum and Saint Louis Science Center offer free general admission. The Science Center is a hands-on science institution; describing all four simply as art museums misses the variety. City of St. Louis, 2026 Zoo, 2026 Art Museum, 2026 History Museum, 2026 Science Center, 2026

The Zoo-Museum District began in 1971, supported by a property-tax structure in the city and county. That public support helps explain why these places can become regular habits rather than expensive special occasions. Free general admission does not mean every attraction, special exhibition, parking space or program is free, and each institution keeps its own opening schedule. Science Center: Zoo-Museum District, 2026

Build a low-cost weekend around a museum's general collection and a park walk. Check opening days and paid extras before inviting visitors; free admission is an access policy, not a promise that every door opens daily. Saint Louis Art Museum, 2026

Work, study and the regional economy

Washington University and BJC HealthCare anchor the medical corridor; Cortex connects innovation businesses with nearby institutions. WashU's national standing is a draw, including its No. 20 position in the 2026 U.S. News national-university edition, but program fit, funding and the particular campus matter more to a moving decision. The region's corporate base includes Centene, Emerson, Reinsurance Group of America, Edward Jones, Graybar, Ameren, Olin and Post Holdings. Annual Fortune classifications change, so treat the employer list as a starting point rather than assuming every firm retains the same rank. NGA's Next NGA West program represents a $1.7 billion geospatial investment; relevant jobs can carry specific citizenship and clearance requirements. Boundaries, taxes and an honest safety check

St. Louis separated from its county in 1876. The independent city's roughly 62 land square miles are reported separately from St. Louis County, whose population is around a million. That complicates comparisons with cities whose boundaries include extensive suburbs. It does not erase violence, segregation or differences between blocks; examine local incident data and visit the area yourself. City history, 2026 Census QuickFacts, 2026 SLMPD statistics, 2026

The city levies a 1% earnings tax on residents' earned income and nonresidents' city-source earnings. Living in a county suburb does not remove the tax if your work is inside the city; remote-work treatment depends on the applicable rules. City earnings tax, 2026

Use cost of living to price the whole household and starting out for first-apartment decisions. Spend your scouting visit in the neighborhoods and inner suburbs you would actually inhabit, with the job address already on the map.
